This 25-year-old landscape needed a makeover. The homeowner wanted to restore the views of Puget Sound from the backyard and patio, as well as restore and improve the safety of the paths and walkways. Other design challenges included improving visibility of the front entrance and making it more welcoming, lawn reduction, maintenance reduction, screening of neighbors, and restoration of planting beds that would include more plant diversity and year-round interest.
A layer of too-tall plantings was removed that was blocking the site lines of the view. Established pines were pruned to maximize their architectural characteristics, and ground covers and other low plants that were site appropriate were added to complete a lush look. Boulders were added to separate spaces and better define the serpentine path, existing flagstone was repurposed into a walkway between lawns and bed, and sloped paths were topped with crushed granite for secure footing. Planting beds were enlarged to reduce the lawn.
The front entry was updated with layers of flowering and fragrant shrubs and perennials to replace the single-plant palette. Unique plants were scattered among the boulders to provide points of interest. Plant containers were placed at the front door to provide a seasonal, welcoming entry.
