Lake View Woodland Garden
Mercer Island, WAA northwest ranch style home with a sweeping view of Lake Washington was the site for this design challenge. The house, located on a steeply sloped property, featured a narrow terrace in the backyard that led to a dramatic descent towards the lake. The landscape was dominated by towering conifers, home to an active eagle habitat.
The client aimed to create a functional and beautiful entertaining area that harmonized with the natural environment. The design needed to support outdoor living and social gatherings, while maintaining tranquility and a connection with nature.
Design Challenge:
The main challenges were replacing an old, elevated deck, creating entertaining areas along the steep slope, and seamlessly connecting the two spaces. Use of low-maintenance materials was a priority. The design needed to harmonize with and respect the natural surroundings while optimizing views of the lake. Maintaining slope stability was an important consideration for all aspects of design and installation.
Design Solutions:
- The deck was enlarged, requiring the removal of a hazard tree. Two replacement trees were planted on the slope, outside the view corridor, to maintain the tree canopy and mitigate soil erosion.
- A carefully sited patio provided a seating area to enjoy the surrounding gardens and lake view.
- Boardwalks descend through a lush Rhododendron garden and connect the deck to the gardens and patio below.
- Natural Materials: Stone, wood, and native plants, combined with ornamentals, were used to blend the design with the surrounding landscape, providing durability and low maintenance.
