An aging deck that was minimally functional needed to be replaced. It served as the transition from the upper balcony to the steeply sloped backyard below; a better connection was needed. With the deck gone, the backyard was now an opportunity for landscape upgrades that would create lush planting spaces, comfortable walkways, and viewpoints.
A space-saving spiral staircase now connects the upper balcony to the bluestone patio below. A series of risers and walkways, progress down the slope, flanked on both sides with planter boxes that mitigate the slope. Dwarf trees, flowering shrubs and perennials, and evergreen selections provide year-round interest, color, and fragrances as well as habitat and food for birds, pollinators and other wildlife. Lighting illuminates the walkways and focal trees; container plantings provide seasonal interest.
